Danilith Nokere Koerse chooses new, safer finish
Danilith Nokere Koerse takes an important step towards enhancing safety for riders by
relocating the race’s finish to a new location, still on the iconic Nokereberg. This decision was made after extensive consultation with sport directors and safety experts. The traditional downhill section in the final kilometer in the centre of Nokere, which in recent years often caused dangerous situations and crashes, will be replaced by a straight, sloping finish stretch that better ensures rider safety. The new finish will be located on another side of Nokereberg, via the Waregemsestraat.
A Unique Course with a Distinct Profile
Danilith Nokere Koerse is renowned for its unique course, characterized by cobblestones and the iconic passage over Nokereberg. This authentic profile will remain unchanged: as always, the race starts in Deinze and follows a large loop through the Flemish Ardennes before returning for cobblestone laps in Kruisem. The men’s race passes through Nokere three times, and the women’s race twice, both including the famous cobblestones of Nokeredorpstraat. The G&V Mountain Prize will reward the best climber with a prize of €1,500. The cobblestone climb in Nokeredorp remains a crucial part of the course.
New finish location on the Waregemsestraat
The finale of the updated course runs through the center of Kruishoutem to the cobblestones near Herlegem Castle, adding an extra challenge. The last kilometer is a straight, slightly uphill finish with an average gradient of 4%, offering both safety and spectacle - ideal for punchy sprinters.
José De Cauwer – cycling commentator: "This is the best decision the organizers of Nokere could have made. The finish as it was could no longer be justified. This way, safety, sportive challenge and spectator atmosphere are perfectly balanced."
Enhancing the Fan experience
Spectators in Nokere can expect the same top-notch experience, now enhanced. The unique atmosphere on Nokereberg will not only remain but be amplified. The new finish zone is located near the VIP area and public village, featuring large screens, stages, and a prime view of the sprint. Fans can follow the thrilling finale up close and enjoy the ambiance that makes Danilith Nokere Koerse so special. Both races will again be broadcast live on Sporza and Eurosport.
Jolien Dhoore – sport director: "As a team director, I understand the importance of traditions in cycling. However, we have great respect for the courageous and well-thought-out decision by the organization to prioritize safety. It is a necessary step that demonstrates Danilith Nokere Koerse not only cherishes its unique character but also takes responsibility for the future of the sport."
Safety first
Safety is an absolute priority for Danilith Nokere Koerse. The races feature intentionally smaller pelotons, and the entire course undergoes a thorough annual risk analysis, evaluating every section for potential hazards. Based on these assessments, specific measures are implemented to safeguard both riders and spectators. Alongside the new finish zone, the organization provides a detailed safety manual for riders, teams, and signalers and works with BoPlan for specialized signage. Additionally, Safe Cycling, a specialized agency, conducts an in-depth analysis to optimize all safety aspects. It was this analysis that determined a new and safer finish was essential.
Sep Vanmarcke – former rider: "Honoring tradition is important, but rider safety always comes first. By relocating the finish, Nokere Koerse is building a future where spectacle and care for the riders go hand in hand."
A Difficult but Necessary Decision
“This was not an easy decision for us,” the organization said. “We understand this change will take some getting used to for many cycling enthusiasts, especially those who cherished the iconic finish on Nokereberg’s cobblestones. This is even more true for us as Nokere locals and organizers. However, discussions with riders and their teams made it clear that safety must come first. With this new finish, we aim to keep the race safe for our riders while continuing to build on the unique identity and atmosphere of Danilith Nokere Koerse. Nokereberg remains central, during the race on the cobblestone climb and at the finish with a unique new uphill finale.”
In Nokere, we are committed to the continued growth of our races. We have evolved from a traditional local race to a semi-classic with a unique cobblestone course. We were the first in the world to offer equal prize money for men and women. We are leading the way in the pursuit of safer cycling and are now even willing to adapt our unique finish for this cause. This is the way to secure the future of our races at the highest level.
Bert Scheirlinckx - CPA Riders’ Union Representative: "It’s never easy to let go of tradition, especially in a race with such a rich history as Danilith Nokere Koerse. But rider safety must always come first. This change is necessary to prevent accidents while preserving the unique and classic character of the race. As a representative of the riders, I am pleased that the organizers of Danilith Nokere Koerse have taken this difficult step."
