Gilbert Desmet (1) was born on February 3, 1931 in Roeselare, Belgium.<\/p>

Desmet was a professional cyclist from 1953 to 1967. He achieved a long list of victories, including 101 victories in his long professional career, including three classics, five semi-classics, and three stage races. He also wore the yellow jersey twice in the Tour de France. He was a versatile rider who particularly excelled in stage races. His nicknames in the peloton were “Smetje” and “Smetje van Lichtervelde.” There is no relation to Gilbert De Smet II from Astene\/Nazareth. He is, however, a cousin by marriage of 1963 world champion Benoni Beheyt and a nephew of former cyclist Gerard Desmet I (father-in-law of Benoni Beheyt). (Source: Wikipedia). <\/p>
