The late Gerard Buyl, a professional cyclist from 1945 to 1959, was born in Beveren-Waas. His best results: In 1947 he won in Stabroek, and in 1948 he did the same in Helchteren. In 1949 he triumphed in Bertem, and in 1950 he won in Nieuwerkerken. In 1951 he added his name to the roll of honour of Nokere Koerse, and received the flowers in Stekene, Sint-Niklaas, and Sint-Lievens-Houtem. In his Beveren-Waas, he won in 1951, 1952, and 1954. In 1952 he added the Three Sister Cities to his name, won the Grand 1-May Prize in Hoboken, and received the victory flowers in Melle. In 1953, he triumphed in the Schaal Sels, winning in Zwijndrecht. Gerard Buyl died in Beveren-Waas on February 10, 1993.
