The late Leon Van Daele was born in Ruddervoorde and was a professional from 1952 to 1964. Of his 90 or so victories, I will highlight his finest: In 1952 he won Roubaix-Cassel-Roubaix. He won Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne in 1954 and 1961. He won the Flanders Championship in Koolskamp in 1956-1957 and 1958. In 1957 he triumphed in Brussels-Ingooigem, won the Three Days of Antwerp, Milano-Mantua and Paris-Brussels. In 1958 he won Brussels-Izegem, the GP Flandria, the Omloop van de Fruitstreek in Alken and Paris-Roubaix. He won the Omloop van het Houtland in 1959 and 1960. In 1959 he added his name to the roll of honour in Ghent-Wevelgem. In 1960, he won the Tielt-Antwerp-Tielt race. In 1961, he was the winner of the Nokere Koerse race. He won the Mandel-Leie-Schelde race in 1962. In 1964, he won the Elfstedenronde, the Omloop der 3 Provinciën, and the Grote 1-Mei Prijs in Hoboken. Leon was a highly talented cyclist with a razor-sharp finishing sprint. He died in Oostkamp on April 30, 2000.
